About the project

The Fostering Violence Prevention and Well-Being for Black Women, Families, and Communities Project is a research study led by Dr. Patrina Duhaney, an Assistant Professor in the University of Calgary's Faculty of Social Work.The purpose of this study is to understand the prevalence and impact of domestic violence (DV) in Black communities and to find strategies for DV prevention and intervention.

Why do we need this project?

In a 2018 Statistics Canada national survey:

of Black women
experience intimate partner violence at
least once since the age of 15

of Black women
experience intimate partner violence
within the last year

of Black women
experience physical or sexual assault
at least once in their lifetime.
